shutterstock_115209481More than 20 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed worldwide in 2014, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). The US regained its No. 1 spot for most cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed in 2014 after being ousted by Brazil in 2013.

Toxins (Botox®, Dysport, and Xeomin) remain the most popular cosmetic procedure overall for both men and women across the globe. For surgical procedures, breast augmentation is highest among women while eyelid surgery is prevalent among men, the data show.

The countries that performed the most cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures in 2014 include:

  • United States – 4,064,571 (20.1%)
  • Brazil – 2,058,505 (10.2%)
  • Japan – 1,260,351 (6.2%)
  • South Korea – 980,313 (4.8%)
  • Mexico – 706,072 (3.5%)
  • Germany – 533,622 (2.6%)
  • France – 416,148 (2.1%)
  • Colombia – 357,115 (1.8%)

The leading cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2014 were:

  • Eyelid Surgery (1,427,451)
  • Liposuction (1,372,901)
  • Breast Augmentation (1,348,197)
  • Fat Grafting (965,727)
  • Rhinoplasty (849,445)

The leading nonsurgical procedures performed were:

  • Botulinum Toxin (4,830,911)
  • Hyaluronic Acid (2,690,633)
  • Hair Removal (1,277,581)
  • Chemical Peel (493,043)
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing (480,271)

Women had more than 17 million cosmetic procedures; 86.3% of the total. The surgical procedures performed most frequently on women in 2014 were:

  • Breast Augmentation
  • Liposuction
  • Eyelid Surgery
  • Fat Grafting
  • Abdominoplasty

Men had more than 2.5 million cosmetic procedures; 13.7% of the total. The surgical procedures performed the most frequently on men in 2014 were:

  • Eyelid Surgery
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Liposuction
  • Gynecomastia
  • Fat Grafting

In 2013, there were more than 23 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed worldwide. The rankings are based solely on those countries from which a sufficient survey response was received and data were considered to be representative.
