Those wanting to look younger without going under the knife may have a new rule book.

The Age Fix, a new book on how to look 10 years younger from plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, FACS, makes sugar enemy No. 1 when it comes to achieving a youthful look.

In Youn’s words, sugar equals wrinkles—words that might slow the consumption of a regular sugar-sweetened latte or afternoon cookie.

“Sugar spikes in our blood can result in chronic inflammation, which can be damaging to our skin,” Youn writes in his book, according to a media release. “Sugar also causes glycation, a process where the sugar molecules bind to and deform the collagen and elastin in our skin.”

This skin-related warning also includes refined sugars such as those found in pasta, white bread, and white rice. Instead, Youn recommends the consumption of a colorful diet built around whole grains and whole fruits and vegetables.

If the sugar fix is critical, Youn recommends pairing the sugar-packed food with protein, fat, or fiber. These pairings slow digestion of the sugar and dampen the impact of the sugar spike on the body. For example, add a smear of peanut butter to a white-bread bagel or top white pasta with olive oil, per the release.

“Sugar equals wrinkles,” Youn states. “No doubt about it. Sugar ages our skin more than any other dietary factor.”

Youn is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Plastic Surgery Practice Editorial Advisory Board.
