In the wake of the horrible Las Vegas shootings last week, one plastic surgeon is doing good to help the victims who survived by offering free plastic surgery.

Las Vegas plastic surgeons Goesel Anson, MD, Michael Edwards, MD, and Terry Higgins, MD, along with the rest of their practice have donated their time and services to multiple shooting victims, including 19-year-old Alexandra Pettis, who was shot in the attack and suffered injuries to her chest and arm. Dr. Anson and her team will perform a skin graft to camouflage the damaged skin on her arm. “We will not charge for any of the surgical or nonsurgical services provided. However, some patients may require more extensive treatment in the operating room (reconstructive surgery), which has costs that we cannot control including anesthesia, surgery center or hospital operating rooms,” says Dr. Anson. “We are also being supported by surgery centers, anesthesiologist and wound care suppliers, as well,” adds Dr. Edwards.

Dr. Anson adds, “We saw seven patients in the first week, two of which required skin grafts. Most of these patients were initially evaluated in the emergency room, and because there were so many severely injured, those who did not need acute care were evaluated and discharged. Many of our patients have stable soft tissue injury and retained bullet fragments and need help with what to do next.”

As for next steps, Dr. Anson says she expects that once the wounds are healed, “the victims may benefit from scar management or revision over the next few weeks, months or years.”
