Barbed Suture

Articulus CT400 by Surgical Specialties is a knotless barbed suture that combines two unidirectional threads to elevate and fixate sagging facial tissue. The CT400 reduces procedure time, increases suture-to-tissue holding strengths, and enhances efficiencies of thread-lift procedures in the midface and the brow. Each suture is 21.6 inches long, with two 41¼2-inch-long opposing barbed sections and a long, thin needle on each end. The barbs are arranged in a helical pattern, with more than 20 barbs per inch for a high barb-to-tissue ratio. The opposing barb segments are connected by a 2-inch section of smooth, nonbarbed suture to create an anchoring site instead of a knot. The 7-inch taper-cut needles are 0.034 inches in diameter and create a narrow needle channel, which allows greater suture-to-tissue contact.

Energy-Based Aesthetic- Device Platforms

Syneron Medical introduces three platforms to address medical aesthetic applications based on its electro-optical synergy (elos™) combined-energy technology, which uses bipolar radiofrequency (RF) along with light or laser energy.

The eLight platform (shown) combines broad-spectrum light with bipolar RF to provide skin rejuvenation and to treat superficial vascular and pigmented lesions and acne. It includes a skin-tightening modality, which is awaiting FDA clearance. The eLaser platform combines diode-laser technology with bipolar RF to provide hair-removal, leg-vein, and wrinkle-reduction treatments. The eMax platform combines bipolar RF with multiple forms of light energy to deliver a complete range of Syneron’s elos modalities in one multiplatform system.

Laser Handpiece

Palomar Medical Technologies has received FDA clearance for the LuxIR Fractional™ Infrared Handpiece, an attachment for the StarLux® Pulsed Light and Laser System. The LuxIR has been cleared for coagulation of soft tissue for dermatological procedures. (It was previously cleared for deep heating for pain relief.) The handpiece delivers IR light deep into the dermis and hypodermis, and contracts the skin by soft-tissue coagulation. Rather than using one large beam to deliver light, the LuxIR uses Palomar’s Fractional technology to deliver light as an array of spots, creating islets of elevated temperature within the dermis that are surrounded by unaffected tissue. This approach tightens the skin by transforming collagen structure in a precise and controlled manner. The skin is protected because a large fraction of the skin is unaffected. Active contact cooling before, during, and after each light pulse contributes to safety and comfort.
