Johns Hopkins surgeons developed a new route to reach and remove tumors located near the base of the skull, in a technique that takes advantage of the natural opening behind the teeth, between the jawbone and cheekbone.
In a paper published in The Laryngoscope describing the procedure that leaves no visible scars because the incisions are made
inside the cheek, the surgeons claimed using the new surgery on several patients has resulted in faster recoveries with fewer complications than conventional approaches, MedicalXpress reports.
Assistant professor of reconstructive and facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology Kofi Boahene, MD, devised the new technique when a 20-year-old female brain tumor patient needed a second surgery after a new tumor developed buried in the base of her skull, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.
