New research shows that the use of TissuGlu® Surgical Adhesive during abdominoplasty procedures results a reduction in total drain volume and days until drain removal. The findings appear in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

In the study, 40 patients undergoing abdominoplasty procedures were randomized to receive TissuGlu or no TissuGlu. Researchers led by Klaus J. Walgenbach, MD, of the University of Bonn in Germany, found that TissuGlu reduced fluid accumulation and the use for post-surgical drains following abdominoplasty procedures.

TissuGlu adheres the tissue flap created during the tummy tuck procedure to the underlying tissue to reduce the fluid that can accumulate in the space and ultimately reducing the time to drain removal. The use of TissuGlu may also shorten the length of time that drains need to be in place, which results in a more comfortable recovery and quicker return to normal activity for patients.

Cohera Medical recently received CE Marking approval for TissuGlu in Europe, and began selling the product to hospitals and surgeons throughout Germany in September 2011. The company plans to expand the commercial availability of TissuGlu to additional European markets. CE Marking refers to a manufacturer’s declaration that the product complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European governing bodies.

They have also received Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval from the FDA to start a prospective, randomized clinical trial for TissuGlu® Surgical Adhesive in the US.
