Johnson & Johnson will reformulate to remove various controversial chemicals from their baby and adult products by 2015. Johnson and Johnson’s extensive family of products includes Aveeno, Neutrogena, and Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, co-founded by the Environmental Working Group and about 175 other nonprofit organizations, lobbied cosmetics companies to stop using certain ingredients, and Johnson & Johnson is heeding their call.

Media reports state that Johnson & Johnson will have reformulated its baby products by the end of 2013. Adult products will be reformulated by the end of 2015.

They plan to reduce traces 1,4 dioxane and the preservative formaldehyde, which is slowly released by a chemical called quaternium-15 to kill bacteria. They will also phase triclosan, phthalates and parabens, as well as fragrance ingredients. That said, they will allow chemicals that release formaldehyde when no safe alternative will work.

The company is also launching a new website to help consumers better understand all the measures taken to provide safe products.
