Music therapy can help patients before, during, and after surgery, and may reduce pain and recovery time, researchers report in Southern Medical Journal.

According to the findings, patients were less anxious before the procedure and recovered more quickly and satisfactorily after by being exposed to music intra- and post-operation. They also required less sedation and were more satisfied with their medical experience.

Study authors suggest offering at several “playlists” so patients can choose one that best suits their musical tastes. Calm, slow, gentle music was shown to produce the most positive results and facilitate relaxation and pain reduction in patients.
