There have been more than 10,000 complaints by cosmetic surgery patients over the last five years, but only 300 of them were addressed.

According to data submitted to Grand National Party lawmaker Ahn Hyoung-hwan by the Korea Consumer Agency, 10,277 complaints about plastic surgery were received by the agency between 2006 and 2010. Per year there were 1,901 in 2006, 1,719 in 2007, 1,698 in 2008, 2,011 in 2009, and 2,948 in 2010.

But only 91 of the complaints were addressed in 2006, 63 in 2007, 42 in 2008 and 71 each in 2009 and 2010, boiling down to a total of just 338 out of the 10,277 who had remedial treatments.

"As plastic surgery becomes more widespread, we are seeing a rise in procedures carried out illegally," Ahn said. "The authorities should take steps to deal with the matter."
