At some point, you’ve likely had a work or home environment that just didn’t feel right. Maybe the space sapped your energy or even brought on a frequent desire to catch some fresh air.

You may have been on to something.

Any “energetically nonsupportive” space can have a negative effect on your body and your mind, and your office is, of course, no exception. The good news is that any space can be turned around with feng shui—the ancient Chinese art of placement.

Feng shui harnesses the natural movement of chi (life force). Chi is a positive, nourishing energy used to create a flowing space, and is said to attract both prosperity and love.

Here are seven simple feng shui principles that can help usher a vibrant and successful energy into your office.

1. Eliminate clutter

Clutter produces a stagnant, draining energy that can negatively block the natural flow of creative force. Decluttering your workspace will clear your mind. While organizing clutter, start small, time your efforts, and tackle one specific area at a time. Every item should be stored and completely out of sight when not in use.

 2. Use mirrors

According to the principles of feng shui, mirrors bring the flowing water element into a space, and in doing so, they create a sense of expansion and calm.

3.Use the correct lighting

Light is also a form of energy. In general, warm or soft white compact fluorescent light bulbs feel and look better than harsh lighting, which comes across as institutional and cold.

 4.Use art to enhance inspiration

Hanging a beautiful piece of art or décor facing your desk will provide inspiration while you do your work. Choose a beautiful, meaningful piece that your eyes will be drawn to.

 5. Make good use of color

Color is light made visible. For doctors’ offices, calming colors that enhance trust and promote balance and clarity are best. Blue, green, yellow, and earth tones are all colors that utilize the five elements of feng shui, which are wood, fire, earth, water, and metal. Think of the stability and balance of earth tones; the soothing, healing traits of serene blue water; the lush and energetic greens in trees; and the comforting, pale yellow warmth of the sun.

6. Go green

Plants are one of the best possible feng shui cures for any office. They provide vibrant and healthy energy from nature while purifying the air. Take good care of your plants, and keep them in visually appealing pots.

 7. Add objects that nourish your spirit

Adding photos of loved ones, framed accomplishments, personal treasures, mementos, or anything else that reminds you of why you are working so hard will keep you smiling. Whenever you feel a warm rush of gratitude from something in your life, it is your own chi expanding and rising.

Incorporate these simple enhancements around your office, and you’ll be amazed at the benefits. Sometimes, the most powerful things we can do for ourselves are also the simplest.
