Clinics in America and Britain are planning to offer “natural” breast enlargements—a procedure that allows plastic surgeons to redistribute fat from one part of the female body to another.

“I recently operated on a mother and daughter who both had big love handles,” says Sydney Coleman, MD, of New York City, who has performed about 30 breast augmentations using the patient’s own fat. “It was easy just to remove it and place it on the chest.”

According to Thomas Baker, MD, a professor of plastic surgery at Miami University’s medical school in Coral Gables, Fla, the procedure allows the breasts to look and feel natural. Baker believes the technique is ideal for women wanting a modest breast enlargement of about one to one and a half cup sizes because a smaller volume of fat is needed.

If the procedure is perfected, fat transfer could be used instead of implants in some cases.
