In a move that is sure to level the playing field for aesthetic physicians who want to offer laser skin resurfacing and other procedures to their patients without betting (and losing) the farm, Ellman International,Inc. has acquired the assets of Sandstone Medical Technologies, LLC.

Producing the exact same results, Sandstone’s affordable laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) portfolio caters to a largely unmet market need for laser and skin resurfacing products priced under $50,000. By contrast, most lasers on the market cost anywhere from $80,000 to more than $200,000. Fully 50 percent of doctors were not buying lasers due to their prohibitive costs.

“More physicians can now purchase lasers without sweating the return on investment,” says Frank D’Amelio, CEO of Ellman International. “For them, it’s an easier buy.” D’Amelio spoke to PSP after he announced the acquisition at the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery & Anti-Aging Medicine: The Next Generation meeting in New York City.

Sandstones’ line consists of:

Cortex, a laser combining CO2 and Erbium YAG for deep skin resurfacing and superficial rejuvenation

Tri-Lase Q-Switched Nd:YAG & Erbium YAG Laser for treatment of tattoos and pigmented lesions as well as superficial skin rejuvenation

Apex IPL & Erbium YAG Laser for hair reduction, acne, vascular and pigmented lesions and skin rejuvenation

Cheveux Diode Laser for permanent hair reduction

These products will appeal to “everyone, but the bottom 10 percent of the market who is retiring,” he says.

There is a slight learning curve. ”Lasers are not a commodity, but most physicians how to use them,” he says. “You start low and safe, but these are easy-to use machines.”

Ellman’s product portfolio includes Pellevé Wrinkle Reduction System and radiofrequency surgical generators. Ellman is primarily owned by Baird Capital Partners, Chicago, IL.
