AAFPRS will continue monitoring reports of incidents of reactions in patients with dermal fillers who received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) president Paul J. Carniol, MD, founder of Carniol Plastic Surgery in Summit, NJ, released a video to discuss the recent reports of facial swelling and fillers after the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), two patients with dermal fillers have had adverse reactions to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) is closely monitoring reports from the FDA and the vaccine manufacturers for its membership of 2,200 facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons.

“Each physician and her/his patients will have to decide whether to have filler and/or the COVID vaccine treatment. Personally, considering the mortality and morbidity associated with the COVID-19 infection, I am recommending that my patients receive the vaccine,” says Carniol. “My counsel is based on the discovery that two patients out of over 13,500 patients, who were treated with the Moderna vaccine, developed transient facial swelling, which resolved uneventfully.  This is only 0.02% of the patients who were treated with the vaccine during the efficacy study.” Carniol’s full video statement can be viewed on the AAFPRS website.

The AAFPRS says it will also continue to monitor reports of incidents of reactions in patients with dermal fillers who received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine and will update AAFPRS members and their patients.
