Study shows microneedle radiofrequency improves the appearance of sagging skin on upper arms, above the knees, and mid-upper back (bra-line).

According to a recent study published by Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, the official journal of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS), a microneedle fractional radiofrequency device—that was previously shown to be effective in the treatment of cellulite, was assessed as a single treatment for body skin laxity and localized fat deposits above the knee, upper arms, and upper-mid back/axillary region (bra-line).

The study, selected as the April 2021 Editor’s Choice, is titled “Single Treatment Protocol with Microneedle Fractional Radiofrequency for Treatment of Body Skin Laxity, Cellulite and Fat Deposits.” These are problems that were historically very difficult to address with few treatment options. But, according to the study, conducted by Macrene Alexiades, MD, PhD and Girish S. Munavalli, MD, MHS, FACMS, this latest technological advance provides an effective single in-office treatment with clinically meaningful improvements and a painless, rapid recovery. However, further study is still needed to evaluate the degree of improvement and long‐term effect beyond a six-months post‐treatment.

“Treatment of body skin laxity and localized fat deposits has been a challenge,” Alexiades said. “The advent of radiofrequency microneedling, a concept to which I have devoted much research over the past 15 years culminating in a new genre of technology, offered an opportunity to meet this challenge. The current successful application of this single non-surgical treatment to the upper arms, bra-line and above the knees offers a solution and is an important advance in our field.”
