The drug sildenafil, sold under brand name Viagra, can be used in the treatment of cellulite problems in women, according to researchers from Croatia.

Karmela Altabas and colleagues from the University Hospital "Sisters of Charity" in Zagreb reported that the drug has beneficial properties when incorporated into moisturizers.

The group noted that because sildenafil is an enzyme inhibitor that has broken down fat in test tubes, researchers believe it might act similarly to fat deposited under the skin.

Researchers found that treatment with high dose of sildenafil led to increased breakdown of fat in fat cells in adipocyte cultures. Furthermore, because Viagra promotes blood flow, a moisturizer containing the drug has the potential to break down fat and then carry it away.

The theory is still at the hypothesis stage.
